Phoenix: Eden17

Phoenix: Eden17 is a four-part original net animation released in 2023 by Studio 4°C, serving as a modern adaptation of the later segments of Osamu Tezuka's seminal manga series, Phoenix. Originally serialized between 1954 and 1988, Tezuka’s work is considered a cornerstone of manga, exploring complex themes of immortality, reincarnation, and the existential weight of human progress. This particular adaptation was produced to reintroduce the philosophical gravity of the Eden17 arc to a contemporary audience, maintaining the core narrative focus on a couple who escapes a dying Earth only to encounter the cycle of life and death on a desolate planet.

The animation direction was led by Shojiro Nishimi, whose work at Studio 4°C is noted for blending traditional aesthetic sensibilities with stylized, atmospheric visual storytelling. The production team aimed to honor Tezuka’s iconic character designs while utilizing the studio's signature fluid animation techniques to depict the cosmic scale of the story. Upon its release on Disney+, the series was recognized for its somber tone and its fidelity to the source material’s contemplative exploration of the soul, receiving praise for its departure from standard high-energy anime tropes in favor of a meditative, melancholic narrative pace.
