I turned my gaze to the various events in daily life and made this filmic diary in a manner as if confessing my feelings. Of course, since I was making the film, I wanted to depict these feelings and events with tricky techniques. I used various methods to shoot photographs of a relative’s wedding, the landscape I see from window of my house, commemorative travel photographs and the like frame-by-frame.

Where it came from
Photodiary 87 is a non-narrative, experimental film work capturing the visual essence of the late 1980s through a lens of candid, diaristic observation. Emerging from the underground independent cinema scene of the period, the film was conceived as a personal meditation on urban landscape and temporal flux. It reflects a shift toward lo-fi aesthetics, prioritizing raw, authentic footage over structured storytelling, which was a hallmark of experimental filmmakers seeking to document the mundane beauty of city life.
The stylistic approach of Photodiary 87 draws heavily from the tradition of the visual essay, utilizing abrupt cuts and ambient soundscapes to create a rhythmic experience. It was received by critics as a poignant artifact of its time, valued for its commitment to unvarnished realism rather than cinematic artifice. While it remained a niche production, its design and execution have since been archived by institutions interested in the evolution of amateur and avant-garde media formats.
