Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Team Go-Getters Out of the Gate!

Released in 2006, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Team Go-Getters Out of the Gate! was produced by OLM to serve as a promotional tie-in for the North American launch of the first Pokémon Mystery Dungeon video games. The special functions as a narrative introduction to the world of the games, centered on a group of Pokémon—a Squirtle, a Charmander, and a Chikorita—who form a rescue team to navigate the hazardous Mystery Dungeons that appear in the series. It was designed to capture the distinct tone of the spin-off titles, which emphasize character-driven storytelling and the unique dynamic of Pokémon working alongside one another as equals.

The animation reflects the aesthetic standards of mid-2000s Pokémon television productions, utilizing a style that aligns closely with the long-running anime series while grounding the characters in the specific mechanics of the dungeon-crawling genre. Directed by Kunihiko Yuyama, the special was crafted to appeal primarily to younger fans and those transitioning from the main series games to the more exploratory, mystery-focused gameplay of the Dungeon titles. Upon its release, it was well-received by the target demographic as a helpful piece of companion media that clarified the premise of the game's setting.
