Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness

Released in 2007 as a pair for the Nintendo DS, Explorers of Time and Darkness were developed by Chunsoft as the second entry in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. The games were conceived to expand upon the emotional narrative structure of the original titles, focusing on a deep, character-driven story where the player is transformed into a Pokémon. This shift toward a more serious, thematic tone regarding friendship and fate distinguished the titles from the mainline Pokémon RPGs, garnering a reputation for being among the most poignant narratives in the franchise's history.

The distinctive art style, featuring vibrant pixel-based character sprites set against lush, hand-painted backgrounds, was crafted to evoke a sense of exploration and discovery within the series' dungeon-crawling framework. The accompanying animated special, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, was produced by OLM, Inc. to promote the games. It utilized the visual language of the franchise's long-running anime adaptation to bring the game's protagonists to life, effectively serving as an atmospheric introduction to the games' core emotional stakes and the mystery of the Time Gears.
