Where it came from
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity was released in 2012 for the Nintendo 3DS, marking the series' transition into the fifth generation of Pokémon. Developed by Spike Chunsoft, the game serves as an entry point into the spin-off series, focusing on a narrative-driven dungeon crawler experience where the player is transformed into a Pokémon. The game was designed to explore themes of friendship and the rebuilding of a fractured world, utilizing a unique art style that combined 3D character models with hand-painted environments.
To promote the game's release in Japan, the animation studio OLM produced an original net animation (ONA) short. This promotional film was intended to capture the emotive, story-focused nature of the game’s opening sequences and introduce players to the central cast of characters. While the game itself received a mixed critical reception regarding its pacing and reduced roster of available Pokémon compared to its predecessors, the animated short was well-received by fans for its polished visual fidelity and its faithful translation of the game's atmosphere.
