Where it came from
Released in 2011, this short film was produced by Toei Animation as a direct response to the devastating Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March of that year. Given the national climate of uncertainty and distress, the studio utilized its popular Pretty Cure franchise to deliver a message of encouragement and resilience specifically targeted at the children affected by the tragedy.
The production serves as a notable example of Japanese animation studios leveraging established intellectual property for public service purposes during crises. Eschewing the complex narrative arcs of the television series, the piece focuses on direct communication, featuring the characters addressing the audience to offer comfort and foster a sense of hope, reflecting the studio's broader commitment to social engagement within its core demographic.
