Princess Jellyfish: Go

Princess Jellyfish: Go was produced as part of the promotional material for the 2010 anime adaptation of Akiko Higashimura’s manga series, Princess Jellyfish. Originally aired on Fuji TV’s Noitamina block, the series explores the lives of a group of socially awkward, otaku-focused women living in a communal apartment in Tokyo. This special feature was created to bridge the gap between the source material and the animated medium, highlighting the show's focus on fashion, unconventional subcultures, and the transformative power of self-discovery.

The visual direction for the franchise, handled by studio Brain's Base, centers on a distinct blend of vibrant, whimsical aesthetic choices and grounding, relatable character beats. The design team sought to reflect the protagonist Tsukimi Kurashita’s obsession with jellyfish through fluid animation and a pastel-heavy palette. Critics and fans alike received the adaptation warmly, noting its sharp sense of humor and emotional resonance, which helped solidify its place as a cult classic within the josei genre.
