Princess Jellyfish Specials

The Princess Jellyfish Specials were released in 2011 as part of the North American home video distribution by Funimation. These episodes were produced to complement the original twelve-episode anime series, which adapted Akiko Higashimura’s acclaimed manga about a group of self-identified otaku women, known as the Amars, living together in a communal apartment building in Tokyo. The specials, often referred to as 'Extra Girls,' were designed to provide additional comedic vignettes and character background that enriched the core narrative's focus on friendship, fashion, and social anxiety.

The animation for the series was handled by Brain's Base, utilizing a distinctively colorful and stylized aesthetic that emphasizes the characters' unique obsessions, particularly Tsukimi’s love for jellyfish. The creative direction aimed to balance the series' quirky, lighthearted humor with a grounded exploration of the transition to adulthood and the importance of finding one's chosen family. Upon its release in the West, the collection was well-received for its quirky charm and its empathetic, non-judgmental portrayal of the characters' subculture interests.
