Where it came from
Ruguo Lishi Shi Yi Qun Miao, often referred to as 'If History Were a Bunch of Cats,' is a popular Chinese web-based animation series produced by Fatchi Moxie Studio. The eighth installment represents the continuation of a project that reimagines pivotal moments and figures from Chinese history as anthropomorphic cats. The series emerged from a digital-first context, aiming to make complex historical narratives accessible and engaging for younger generations through stylized, humorous character design.
The creative direction of the series relies on a distinct visual shorthand that balances historical trivia with lighthearted caricature. By blending the stoic gravity of ancient dynasties with the playful behaviors of felines, the studio sought to break away from traditional documentary styles. Upon its release, the series was well-received by online audiences for its clever subversion of historical tropes and consistent, expressive animation quality.
