Where it came from
Ruguo Lishi Shi Yi Qun Miao, or If History Were a Group of Cats, is a web-based ONA series produced by Fatchi Moxie Studio. The project was conceived as an anthropomorphic reimagining of historical figures, portraying significant events and personalities from Chinese history through the lens of domestic cats. The series emerged during a period of growing interest in 'gijinka' or personified media, where creators sought to make historical education more accessible and entertaining for younger digital-native audiences.
The character design choices reflect a synthesis of feline behavioral traits matched with the recognized iconography of historical figures. By stripping away the solemnity usually associated with historical documentaries and replacing it with the whimsical, often chaotic nature of cat behavior, the studio aimed to spark curiosity about historical narratives. While the series maintains a niche status, it has been noted for its unique visual approach to historical storytelling and its success in blending educational content with meme-oriented humor.
