Where it came from
Shan He She Ji Tu, or The Legend of Mountains and Seas, is an animated web series produced by Maten Animation. It is based on a popular Chinese web manhua of the same name, which centers on the story of a high school student named Lu Shu who gains superpowers and finds himself transported to a mystical world. The adaptation process sought to translate the fast-paced, humor-infused storytelling of the original source material into the ONA format, emphasizing dynamic action sequences and a vibrant, modern aesthetic that appeals to contemporary audiences of domestic Chinese animation.
The visual design of the series reflects a commitment to the 'donghua' style, characterized by fluid 2D-influenced character designs that prioritize expressive motion and comedic timing. Upon its release, the project was received as a notable entry in the growth of China's domestic animation industry, drawing attention for its faithful adaptation of the manhua's tone. It is widely regarded as a representative work within the fantasy-adventure genre, reflecting the evolving production standards and thematic interests of the Maten Animation studio during its period of development.
