Slime Boukenki: Umi da, Yeah!

Slime Boukenki: Umi da, Yeah! was released in 1999 as a promotional short associated with the Dragon Quest franchise. Produced by Production I.G, the animation was created to capitalize on the enduring popularity of the Slime mascot, which had become the iconic face of the role-playing game series. The short was intended for a younger audience, offering a lighthearted, comedic take on the creatures in a beach setting, departing from the typical high-fantasy tone of the core games.

The character designs maintain the aesthetic established by Akira Toriyama in the original game series, characterized by simple, expressive shapes that translate well into animation. Production I.G utilized their expertise in traditional cel-style animation to capture the bouncy, fluid movement of the slimes. While the short was a niche release, it is regarded by collectors today as a charming piece of 1990s Japanese gaming ephemera that reflects the experimental promotional strategies used by game publishers during that era.
