Where it came from
Strawberry Panic was produced by Studio Madhouse and aired in 2006, originating as a multimedia project that serialized light novels in Dengeki G's Magazine. The series was designed to explore the romantic interactions within an exclusive all-girls boarding school setting on Astraea Hill, tapping into the popular yuri subgenre that emphasizes emotional intensity and hierarchical social structures among students.
The animation direction and character designs were crafted to lean into the aesthetic conventions of early 2000s shoujo-inspired storytelling, prioritizing soft color palettes and expressive character portraits. While the series received a modest reception during its initial broadcast, it remains a notable example of Madhouse’s mid-2000s expansion into niche romance narratives, ultimately finding a sustained audience through its dedicated fan community.
