Sumiko is a latch-key kid living in a suburb of Tokyo, where she is somewhat of a local celebrity. She is 8 year's old and dreams of becoming a famous singer some day. Her Mom works at a neighborhood ramen shop and Sumiko hangs out there a lot after school. Her Papa is a truck driver who is often away from home. However, when he is at home, she loves to accompany him to the local Karaoke box, where she can practice singing her favorite tunes.

Where it came from
Sumiko is a 2014 television production developed by the Japanese studio Opera House. It emerged during a period when the studio was exploring narrative-driven animated content, focusing on character-centric storytelling that balanced traditional aesthetic sensibilities with modern digital production techniques.
The series was conceived as a thematic exploration of personal growth and interpersonal dynamics. While information regarding specific lead designers is sparse, the production is characteristic of Opera House's mid-2010s output, which prioritized expressive character animation and atmospheric settings to engage viewers within the competitive landscape of independent broadcast animation.
