Where it came from
Summer Ghost was released in 2021 as the directorial debut of the renowned Japanese illustrator loundraw. Produced by FLAT STUDIO, the film emerged from loundraw's desire to explore the transient nature of youth and the intersection between life and the afterlife. The project was initially conceived as part of an illustrative art series before being developed into a fully realized cinematic narrative, allowing the artist to translate his signature ethereal aesthetic and nuanced sense of lighting into moving images.
The film's visual design is characterized by a deliberate focus on atmospheric color palettes and quiet, introspective character moments. Upon its release, it was noted by critics for its emotive storytelling and its departure from traditional high-octane anime tropes in favor of a more meditative, melancholic pace. The project serves as a cornerstone of FLAT STUDIO's commitment to prioritizing personal, artist-driven animation that captures the fleeting, often unspoken anxieties of the adolescent experience.
