Where it came from
Summer Days with Coo was released in 2007 by the acclaimed studio Shin-Ei Animation. Directed and written by Keiichi Hara, the film is an adaptation of Masao Kogure’s children’s novel Kappa no Coo to Natsuyasumi. The story follows a young boy who discovers a prehistoric water imp, or kappa, and the subsequent journey they take to find others of the creature's kind while navigating the complexities of modern Japanese society.
The film is widely celebrated for its grounded, melancholic, and deeply empathetic approach to animation. Hara, known for his work on the Crayon Shin-chan franchise, sought to move away from fantastical tropes to explore themes of environmental preservation and the pressures of contemporary family life. Upon its release, it was praised by critics for its emotive storytelling and beautiful depiction of the Japanese landscape, eventually winning the Animation Film Award at the 62nd Mainichi Film Awards.
