Super Real Mahjong: Mahjong Battle Scramble - Konran-teki Sento Mahjong

Released in 1990, Super Real Mahjong: Mahjong Battle Scramble represents the transition of the popular arcade mahjong franchise into the realm of original video animation. The Super Real Mahjong series, developed by Seta, was famously known for its digitized, realistically rendered characters that stood in contrast to traditional anime aesthetics of the era. This OVA sought to capitalize on the cult following the games had developed in Japanese arcades, bringing the competitive, high-stakes atmosphere of the digital table to an animated format.

The production utilized a style intended to bridge the gap between the static character portraits players recognized from the arcade cabinets and the fluid movement required for an episodic narrative. As part of a series often categorized by its risqué visual style and distinct character design, this title functioned as a promotional and entertainment vehicle for existing fans. While the OVA was primarily marketed toward the enthusiast niche familiar with the source games, it serves as a historical document of early 1990s Japanese arcade culture and the era's experimentation with multi-media franchise expansion.
