Super Robot Wars Original Generation: The Animation

Super Robot Wars Original Generation: The Animation is a three-episode original video animation series released in 2005, produced by the animation studio Brain's Base under the Bandai Visual label. It was developed to bridge the narrative gaps within the Super Robot Wars franchise, specifically focusing on the original characters and mecha that debuted in the tactical role-playing games released by Banpresto. By centering on the 'Original Generation' continuity, the series provided a concentrated visual expansion of the complex lore established in the games.

The animation was directed by Jun Kawagoe, who aimed to translate the fast-paced, high-stakes tactical combat of the video games into a coherent cinematic format. The character designs were handled by Sachiko Sugino, whose work sought to retain the distinctive aesthetic of the source material while enhancing the fluidity of the robotic combat sequences. Upon its release, the OVA was generally well-received by the established player base, serving as a significant proof of concept for the animation potential of the Super Robot Wars property.
