Tenchi the Movie 2: The Daughter of Darkness

Tenchi the Movie 2: The Daughter of Darkness, released in Japan in 1997, serves as the second feature film installment in the Tenchi Muyo! franchise. Produced by AIC and distributed by Pioneer LDC, which later became NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan, the film was developed during the peak of the franchise's international popularity. It follows the narrative tradition of the series by introducing a new character, Maypril, who complicates the lives of Tenchi and his companions, aiming to explore deeper themes of family and personal identity within the established science-fiction harem framework.

The film's visual identity was overseen by the creative team at AIC, maintaining the stylistic consistency expected by fans of the original Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA series. The production sought to deliver a more cinematic and dramatic scope compared to the television series, emphasizing intricate character designs and polished animation sequences. Upon its release, the film was received as a standard extension of the Tenchi universe, praised by the established fanbase for its familiarity while providing the high-production values synonymous with the franchise's mid-nineties cinematic efforts.
