Tengai Makyou: Ziria Oboro-hen

Tengai Makyou: Ziria Oboro-hen was released in 1990 as a two-part original video animation (OVA) adaptation based on the foundational 1989 PC Engine CD game, Tengai Makyou: Ziria. Produced by AIC and directed by Kōichi Chigira, this project sought to distill the high-fantasy, pseudo-historical Japan setting of the game into a visual narrative format. It served as a vital expansion of the franchise's multimedia strategy, which leveraged the unique capabilities of the CD-ROM medium to blend traditional aesthetics with steampunk-inflected folklore.

The character designs were handled by Koji Matsuoka, who worked to translate the game's stylized, woodblock-print inspired art direction into a cohesive animated form. The series was designed to appeal to the growing niche of home video enthusiasts who favored the dark, supernatural themes popularized by the darker side of 1980s and 90s Japanese animation. While it is remembered as a product of its era's experimental approach to game adaptations, it remains a significant touchstone for collectors interested in the early days of the Tengai Makyou legacy.
