Where it came from
Tetsujin 28 FX, also known as Tetsujin 28-go FX, was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha in 1992 as a direct sequel to the iconic 1963 original series created by Mitsuteru Yokoyama. The series was designed to modernize the franchise for a new generation of viewers, introducing a sleek, high-tech aesthetic that contrasted with the blocky, retro-industrial look of the original giant robot. This shift reflected the 1990s fascination with advanced mecha designs and digital-age storytelling.
The production team aimed to bridge the gap between the classic Super Robot genre and the emerging Real Robot style popular at the time. By centering the plot on the son of the original protagonist, Kaneda Shotaro, the series explored themes of legacy and technological evolution. While it remains a significant chapter in the long-running Tetsujin lineage, its reception was mixed; dedicated fans of the 1963 original often viewed the radical redesign of the titular robot as a departure from the series' established, humble roots.
