Where it came from
The Case Files of Jeweler Richard, known in Japan as Housekishou Richard-shi no Nazo Kantei, originated as a light novel series written by Nanako Tsujimura and illustrated by Utako Yukihiro. The 2020 television anime adaptation was produced by Studio Shuka, a studio formed by former members of Brain's Base. The series focuses on the partnership between a brilliant, refined British jeweler and a bright-hearted Japanese university student, utilizing the appraisal of gemstones as a vehicle to explore the hidden human stories and cultural histories behind the objects.
Studio Shuka’s approach to the adaptation emphasized a contemplative, character-driven aesthetic that mirrored the refined nature of its protagonists. By focusing on the interplay of light and color inherent to jewelry design, the studio sought to translate the subtle, dialogue-heavy tension of the light novels into a visual medium. Upon release, the series was received as a gentle, grounded addition to the mystery genre, praised for its focus on emotional intelligence and the specific, meticulous details regarding gemology that anchored the narrative.
