Where it came from
The U149 OVA is an extension of the broader The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls franchise, specifically adapting the U149 manga series which focuses on the lives and professional development of idols under the age of 149 centimeters. Produced by Cygames Pictures and released in 2023, the project was designed to spotlight the unique challenges and camaraderie within the 3rd Production division, offering a more intimate look at the characters than the larger-scale anime adaptations that preceded it.
The visual design and narrative direction were guided by a desire to capture the heartwarming, slice-of-life essence of the original manga by Kyowno. By focusing on the mentorship dynamics between the young idols and their producer, the adaptation aimed to emphasize growth and sincerity over the spectacle often associated with the series. It was well-received by fans for its attention to character detail and its faithful translation of the source material's gentle aesthetic.
