Where it came from
The Marginal Service is an original television anime series produced by Studio 3Hz, which debuted in April 2023. Conceived as an unconventional buddy-cop action series, it explores a world where supernatural entities live secretly among humans, requiring a specialized government task force to maintain the veil of reality. The series was directed by Masayuki Sakoi with series composition overseen by Kenta Ihara, focusing on a blend of urban fantasy, humor, and episodic character-driven investigations.
The aesthetic of the series is notable for its distinct, high-energy character designs by Yoshio Kosakai, who aimed to give the members of the titular task force a flamboyant and expressive visual identity. Upon its release, the show was received as a stylistic experiment within the medium, garnering attention for its eccentric tone and colorful visual palette, though it remained a niche entry within the competitive 2023 spring anime season.
