Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2005, The Prince of Tennis: Two Samurais, The First Game marked the first feature-length theatrical outing for the popular anime series based on Takeshi Konomi’s manga. Produced by Production I.G, the film was designed to expand the franchise’s narrative scope, moving the setting from the familiar school courts to a luxury cruise ship hosted by a wealthy entrepreneur. The production sought to offer a higher-budget cinematic experience while retaining the core character dynamics that fueled the television series' success.

The film’s direction and visual execution reflected a deliberate effort to lean into the heightened, almost supernatural intensity of the sport that defined the franchise's aesthetic. By introducing new, formidable opponents and a more dramatic, high-stakes environment, the creative team aimed to satisfy the dedicated fanbase that had grown since the anime's 2001 debut. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of the series, serving as a definitive highlight for the Prince of Tennis multimedia boom of the mid-2000s.
