There is a painting called ‘The Shaman Sorceress’ left at ‘my’ home by a mute girl and her father. As is always the case, this picture is worth a thousand words. The story behind the painting begins with a shaman named Mohwa who has been living with her mute daughter Nang-Yi and practicing shamanism her entire life. One day her son Wook-Yi, who had been gone for several years to study returns home, but as a converted Christian. This sparks a conflict between Wook-Yi and Mohwa and drives the family into tragedy.

Where it came from
The Shaman Sorceress was produced by the independent animation studio Meditation With a Pencil, emerging from the experimental independent film scene of the early 2000s. The project was conceived as an exploration of meditative visual storytelling, intended to bridge the gap between traditional illustrative techniques and contemporary digital animation. It reflects the studio's broader commitment to slow-cinema aesthetics, prioritizing atmospheric pacing over conventional narrative structures.
The visual design of the film was spearheaded by the collective's core creative team, who sought to evoke the texture of hand-drawn sketches through a minimalist, muted color palette. By utilizing sparse character designs set against expansive, painterly backgrounds, the creators aimed to encourage a contemplative viewing experience. Upon its limited festival circuit release, the work was noted by critics for its technical restraint and its departure from the high-energy output common in independent animation during that era.
