Where it came from
Tokimeki Fushigi Diary is a special production released in 2002, serving as a precursor to the main Ultra Maniac anime series based on the manga by Wataru Yoshizumi. Produced by Ashi Productions, this short was designed to introduce audiences to the magical world of Ayu Tateishi and Nina Sakura, capturing the quintessential aesthetic of early 2000s shōjo animation with its bright color palette and whimsical character designs.
The animation was crafted to capture the lighthearted, romantic tone that defined the original serialization in Ribon magazine. By focusing on the interplay between the mundane school life of the protagonists and the magical elements derived from the Magic Kingdom, the studio aimed to build anticipation for the serialized television adaptation. It remains a notable piece of promotional history for fans of the magical girl genre from that era.
