Trickster

Trickster, released in 2016 by TMS Entertainment and Shin-Ei Animation, was conceived as a modern-day reimagining of Edogawa Ranpo's classic Boy Detectives Club stories. The series was designed to transpose the mystery-solving spirit of the original Showa-era literature into a futuristic 2030s Tokyo setting, blending traditional suspense tropes with supernatural character dynamics. Directed by Masahiro Mukai, the project sought to appeal to a contemporary audience through stylized visuals and an emphasis on the psychological friction between its central protagonists.

The character designs were handled by the renowned manga artist Peach-Pit, the duo celebrated for their work on series like Rozen Maiden. Their artistic direction aimed for a distinctive, slender aesthetic that balanced dark thematic elements with the polished look of modern high-budget animation. While the series garnered attention for its ambitious premise and the prestige of its creative team, it received a mixed reception from viewers and critics, who often debated the balance between the homage to Ranpo’s detective fiction and the series' own original narrative trajectory.
