Where it came from
Triage X: RECOLLECTION XOXO was released in 2015 as an original video animation (OVA) companion piece to the Triage X anime series, which was produced by studio Xebec. The project was based on the manga series by Shouji Sato, known for his distinct high-action and stylized artistic approach, which the studio aimed to translate into the animated medium. This particular installment was created to provide supplemental content, often focusing on character-driven scenarios that expanded upon the established universe of the Black Label vigilante organization.
The animation reflects the creative direction of studio Xebec during a period where they were balancing intense action sequences with the specific visual tropes of the seinen demographic. While the main series received mixed critical reception due to its reliance on genre-specific fan service and abbreviated pacing, the OVA format allowed the production team to experiment with more contained narratives. The design and aesthetic choices reflect the late-2000s and mid-2010s trend of bringing niche, edgy action manga to the screen through focused, standalone animation segments.
