Where it came from
Tsukigakirei was produced by studio feel. and first aired in the spring of 2017. Directed by Seiji Kishi, the series was conceived as an original romantic drama intended to capture the quiet, often awkward sincerity of first love among middle school students. The project sought to distinguish itself from typical genre tropes by focusing on a grounded, realistic depiction of adolescent communication in the digital age, characterized by tentative text messages and burgeoning personal discovery.
The visual direction of the series utilized a blend of traditional hand-drawn animation and 3D backgrounds, a stylistic choice meant to immerse viewers in the specific, suburban atmosphere of Kawagoe. The character designs were kept relatively simple and understated to mirror the series' introspective tone. Upon its release, it was well-received by critics and audiences alike, earning praise for its gentle pacing, emotional restraint, and its authentic portrayal of the social pressures facing young teenagers.
