Yakuza bosses are supposed to be tough, ruthless, and treat their men like cogs in a callous criminal machine. When former cop and ex-con Chikara Doumeki accepts his latest bodyguard assignment, however, he realizes that there’s something different about his new boss, Yashiro. Because while Yashiro may seem as emotionally distant as his counterparts, he’s also a closet masochist who enjoys receiving pain as much as his job involves bringing it.
Yashiro’s feelings for a least a few of his men also extends far beyond what’s normally extended to other members of the same crime family… a group that now includes Chikara. Of course, Chikara’s got his own issues, and nobody can beat an ex-cop when it comes to putting the lockdown on a relationship.

Where it came from
Twittering Birds Never Fly: The Clouds Gather was released in 2020 as the first feature-length film adaptation of Kou Yoneda’s acclaimed manga series. Produced by Studio GRIZZLY, a studio established specifically for this project, the film was designed to translate the series' mature themes and nuanced character work into a cinematic format. The production team sought to maintain the gritty, noir-inspired atmosphere and complex emotional dynamics that defined the source material.
The film was received as a faithful and visually evocative adaptation of the initial volumes of Yoneda’s work, focusing on the volatile relationship between the yakuza underboss Yashiro and his bodyguard Doumeki. By emphasizing the somber color palette and psychological intensity of the manga, the creators aimed to elevate the boys' love genre beyond conventional tropes, securing a dedicated audience among fans who valued its focus on character development and realistic, often painful, human connection.
