Where it came from
TWOCAR was produced by the Japanese animation studio Silver Link and released in 2017 to commemorate the studio's tenth anniversary. The series was directed by Masafumi Tamura, with original character designs by Tiv, a well-regarded illustrator known for her distinct, vibrant aesthetic. The show centers on the niche sport of competitive sidecar racing, following a pair of high school girls as they navigate both personal friction and the high-speed demands of the track.
The series was conceived as an original project rather than an adaptation of existing source material, which allowed the creative team to focus entirely on the dynamic between its two leads. Despite the technical focus on racing, the narrative leans heavily into character-driven comedy and drama. Upon its release, it was noted for its experimental approach to pacing and its detailed depiction of the mechanical aspects of racing vehicles, though it ultimately garnered a niche following rather than mainstream critical or commercial acclaim.
