Uchuu no Kisetsu

Uchuu no Kisetsu, or Seasons of the Universe, is a seminal work by the Japanese science fiction author Yasutaka Tsutsui, first published in the mid-1970s. Emerging during a period of significant experimentation in Japanese literature, the novel blends elements of surrealism, cosmic horror, and existential satire. It represents Tsutsui’s signature style, which frequently challenges the boundaries of traditional genre fiction by juxtaposing mundane human scenarios with vast, unsettling metaphysical concepts.

The thematic focus of the work centers on the collapse of reality and the indifference of the universe, a hallmark of Tsutsui’s output during his most prolific decade. The design and presentation of the original volumes typically reflected the minimalist and often avant-garde aesthetics common in 1970s Japanese literary publishing. Critically, the work is noted for its linguistic dexterity and its role in cementing Tsutsui’s reputation as a pioneer who brought intellectual depth and dark humor to the science fiction genre in Japan.
