Where it came from
Vixens was released as a two-part original video animation in 1995 by Knack Productions, arriving during a period when the Japanese home video market was heavily saturated with experimental, adult-oriented animation. The series emerged from a specific cultural climate that favored episodic, supernatural, and character-driven narratives, often blending noir sensibilities with fantastical elements to capture the attention of a growing demographic of adult anime consumers.
The production utilized a style characteristic of mid-nineties boutique studios, prioritizing expressive character designs and atmospheric lighting to build its aesthetic profile. While the series was aimed at a niche audience and did not achieve widespread critical acclaim, it remains a documented example of the independent production values and stylistic ambitions that defined the direct-to-video anime scene of the mid-1990s.
