Watashi no Ashinaga Oji-san Pilot Film

The Watashi no Ashinaga Oji-san pilot film was produced by Nippon Animation in 1990 as a precursor to the full-length television series adaptation of Jean Webster's classic novel. Created as part of the studio's long-running World Masterpiece Theater initiative, the pilot served to establish the visual tone and character designs before full-scale production began. It was designed to capture the sentimental, turn-of-the-century aesthetic that defined the studio's literary adaptations during the late 20th century.

The production sought to balance the source material's epistolary structure with the fluid, expressive animation style popularized by Japanese television anime of the era. The animation direction emphasized character growth and emotional nuance, aiming to resonate with a young demographic familiar with the studio's prestigious track record. While the pilot remained a functional internal tool for the studio, it represents a preserved snapshot of the creative planning process behind one of the most recognizable animated interpretations of the Daddy-Long-Legs narrative.
