Where it came from
When They Cry Rei was released in 2009 as a five-episode original video animation series, serving as an epilogue and thematic bridge for the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni franchise. Following the conclusion of the main narrative arcs produced by Studio DEEN, these episodes were created to explore the aftermath of the series' core conflicts, blending comedic slice-of-life elements with the psychological horror themes that defined the original visual novels and anime adaptations.
The visual direction and character designs were crafted to maintain continuity with the previous Studio DEEN series, ensuring that the transition between the dark, supernatural mystery of the main story and the more experimental, reflective tone of Rei was consistent for the fanbase. While the reception was mixed due to the abrupt tonal shifts—ranging from lighthearted fanservice to heavy, existential introspection—it remains a significant artifact for enthusiasts seeking closure on the characters' fates after the tumultuous events of the primary timeline.
