Where it came from
When Will Ayumu Make His Move?, or Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru, originated as a manga series by Soichiro Yamamoto, serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine starting in 2019. The narrative centers on the charmingly deadpan dynamic between high schoolers Ayumu Tanaka and Urushi Yaotome within their school's shogi club, focusing on Ayumu’s vow to confess his feelings only after he manages to defeat his upperclassman in a game of shogi.
The 2022 television adaptation was produced by the studio SILVER LINK and directed by Mirai Minato. The production team aimed to capture the gentle, slow-burn pacing and the understated visual humor inherent in Yamamoto’s minimalist art style. Upon release, the series was noted for its relaxing atmosphere and the distinct comedic rhythm established by the protagonists' constant back-and-forth, finding a steady audience among fans of character-driven slice-of-life romantic comedies.
