Where it came from
Whispered Words, known in Japan as Sasameki Koto, was produced by the studio AIC and broadcast in 2009. The series is an adaptation of the manga by Takashi Ikeda, which explored themes of high school romance, identity, and the complexities of unrequited love. It emerged during a period when the yuri genre was seeing increased visibility in anime, though it differentiated itself by focusing on a more grounded, comedic, and character-driven approach to its subject matter.
The anime's design and aesthetic were helmed by director Eiji Suganuma, who aimed to translate Ikeda's distinct art style into a fluid animation format. The series is often noted for its soft visual palette and its focus on the dynamic between the protagonist, Sumika, and her best friend, Ushio. While it received a modest reception during its initial run, it has since maintained a dedicated following among fans of the genre for its sincere portrayal of adolescent relationships.
