Where it came from
White Snake, released in 2019, was produced by Light Chaser Animation as a sophisticated CGI reimagining of the classic Chinese folktale The Legend of the White Snake. The studio sought to modernize the narrative by focusing on the origin story of the protagonist, Blanca, and her romantic connection to a human snake hunter, grounding the mythological fantasy in a cinematic language inspired by traditional Chinese aesthetics and landscapes.
Directed by Amp Wong and Zhao Ji, the film was designed to bridge the gap between traditional folklore and contemporary animation techniques. The production team utilized a distinct visual style that synthesized elements of ink-wash painting with fluid, high-fidelity character animation. Upon its release, it was well-received by audiences and critics alike, credited with playing a significant role in the resurgence of domestic Chinese animation by demonstrating that ancient myths could be adapted into high-budget, commercially successful features.
