Where it came from
Xanadu: Dragonslayer Densetsu was released in 1988 as an original video animation, serving as a cinematic tie-in to the popular Xanadu computer role-playing game developed by Nihon Falcom. Produced by Toei Animation during the peak of the 1980s direct-to-video market, the project sought to translate the high-fantasy mechanics and lore of the Xanadu series into a narrative format, capitalizing on the immense popularity of the franchise among Japanese PC gamers.
The production reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of late 1980s anime, characterized by traditional cel animation techniques and a somber fantasy tone. The character designs and visual direction were crafted to maintain continuity with the game's world-building, focusing on the dark, atmospheric dungeon-crawling journey that defined the series. While intended for an established fanbase, the OVA remains a significant artifact of the era's cross-media promotional efforts between software developers and animation studios.
