X2 is basically a short prequel to the theatrical X film. It consists of four music videos. The first three are merely stills of CLAMP's pre-1994 X artwork, but the fourth is animated by Madhouse. Being the only music video that contains actual plot, the fourth video introduces some of the major characters and quickly lashes through the first few X manga (equivalent to X TV series episodes 1-3) which take place before the theatrical movie.

Where it came from
X² is a 1996 original video animation produced by the renowned studio Madhouse, serving as a direct continuation and stylistic expansion of the X television series and film projects. It was created to provide fans with a more visceral, animation-heavy exploration of the dark fantasy world established in the original CLAMP manga, prioritizing fluid action sequences and the studio's signature moody aesthetic over dense exposition.
The animation reflects the high-water mark of 1990s cel-based anime, utilizing Madhouse's expertise in dark, atmospheric storytelling. While it serves as a supplement to the broader X universe, it is widely regarded by enthusiasts as a technical achievement that showcases the studio's ability to maintain high production values even in shorter-form content, effectively capturing the gothic, apocalyptic tone that defined the franchise's visual legacy.
