Where it came from
Released in 1983, Xabungle Graffiti serves as a cinematic reimagining of the television series Combat Mecha Xabungle, produced by Sunrise. Directed by series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino, the film was designed to distill the chaotic, Western-inspired energy of the original show into a cohesive feature-length narrative. It reflects the experimental spirit of early 1980s mecha anime, moving away from the conventional super robot tropes of the era to focus on a rugged, post-apocalyptic frontier setting.
The film's visual design retains the distinct, angular mechanical aesthetics popularized by Kunio Okawara, whose work remains central to the identity of the franchise. By juxtaposing gritty world-building with the frantic pacing typical of Tomino's direction, the project aimed to offer a more focused experience for established fans. While it was received as a companion piece to the TV series rather than a standalone phenomenon, it remains a notable example of the studio's mid-80s efforts to refine their long-form storytelling techniques.
