Where it came from
Youkai Watch! serves as the 2019 relaunch of the popular multimedia franchise developed by Level-5. Following the conclusion of the original long-running series, OLM produced this iteration to revitalize the brand for a new generation, shifting the tone to prioritize episodic, fast-paced comedy while retaining the core premise of protagonist Nate Adams interacting with invisible spirits known as youkai.
The series was designed to lean into a more zany, surreal aesthetic, distinguishing itself from the character-driven narrative arcs of its predecessors. Studio OLM utilized this creative reboot to experiment with looser animation styles and meta-humor, aiming to appeal to younger audiences through heightened physical comedy and distinct visual gags that play off traditional Japanese folklore archetypes reimagined for a modern suburban setting.
