Youkai Watch ♪

Youkai Watch ♪ emerged in 2021 as a revival series produced by TV Tokyo, designed to bring the franchise back to its comedic, episodic roots. The series sought to recapture the playful, slapstick energy that defined the original 2013 anime, focusing on the supernatural antics of the protagonist Nate Adams and his spectral companion Jibanyan. By centering on short, self-contained stories, the production aimed to appeal to both long-time fans and a new generation of viewers who appreciated the series' lighthearted blend of Japanese folklore and modern suburban life.

The character designs and animation style for this iteration were overseen by the creative teams at OLM, Inc., who have guided the aesthetic of the series since its inception. The project was explicitly framed as a reboot of the franchise's core appeal, utilizing a vibrant color palette and expressive, exaggerated character work that characterizes the Youkai Watch aesthetic. Critics and audiences generally received the series as a nostalgic return to form, appreciating how it distilled the franchise’s established world-building into a format that emphasizes humor and character interaction over long-form serialized drama.
