Where it came from
Youkai Watch: Forever Friends was released in 2018 as the fifth theatrical feature in the popular Youkai Watch franchise. Produced by OLM, the film serves as a prequel to the primary series, shifting the narrative focus to the 1960s in a fictionalized version of Tokyo known as Sakura Motomachi. This departure in timeline was intended to provide a fresh entry point for audiences, exploring the origin of the franchise’s supernatural bond between humans and spirits through the eyes of a new protagonist, Shin Shimomachi.
The production sought to blend nostalgic Showa-era aesthetics with the established lighthearted yet supernatural tone of the series. The character designs maintained the signature approachable, creature-focused style that Level-5 established at the brand's inception. While critics noted the film offered a more emotional and grounded story compared to previous entries, it was received as a technically polished addition that successfully expanded the franchise's lore beyond the central contemporary cast.
