The story begins when Berry, an average girl from an average home, meets Hack, a girl who looks like a boy. Charmed by Hack, Berry meets up with the team Hack leads, the Ghost Detectives Club. Members of this club are “socially dead,” working invisibly within the digitally controlled society of Tom Sawyer. As she works with the group, Berry learns about Zero, a mysterious figure who lurks within Tom Sawyer’s underground. She and Hack decide to chase down this figure, and in time, the truth behind the city is revealed...

Where it came from
Yurei Deco was produced by the acclaimed animation studio Science SARU and released in 2022 as an original television anime series. Conceived in the wake of the studio's desire to explore themes of digital perception and social reality, the project was directed by Tomohisa Shimoyama with a script overseen by Dai Sato. The production aimed to blend experimental visual styles with a narrative questioning the nature of truth in a hyper-digitized society, drawing aesthetic inspiration from the aesthetics of Tom Sawyer and mid-century futurism.
The series centers on the inhabitants of Tom Sawyer Island, a metaverse where reality and digital overlays are inseparable. Design-wise, the team focused on high-contrast palettes and fluid character movements that define the Science SARU signature. Upon its release, it was noted for its unconventional storytelling structure and ambitious visual metaphors, garnering interest from critics for its bold departure from traditional genre tropes while remaining a niche, arthouse-leaning addition to the studio's catalog.
