Yuri!!! on ICE

Yuri!!! on Ice debuted in October 2016 as an original anime television series produced by MAPPA, directed by Sayo Yamamoto and written by Mitsurou Kubo. The series was developed as a groundbreaking exploration of figure skating, aiming to capture the technical precision of the sport while weaving a nuanced narrative regarding professional growth and interpersonal relationships. The creative team consulted with professional choreographer Kenji Miyamoto to ensure the authenticity of the skating sequences, which became a defining aesthetic pillar of the production.

The series received widespread critical acclaim upon release, particularly for its subversion of traditional sports anime tropes and its sophisticated portrayal of its central relationship. It was lauded for its artistic direction and the emotional resonance of its character arcs. By the conclusion of its broadcast, the show had become a significant cultural phenomenon, fostering a devoted international fanbase and earning praise for its contributions to the portrayal of LGBTQ+ themes in mainstream animation.
