Where it came from
Yuri Is My Job! originated as a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Miman, which began serialization in 2016. The story explores the complexities of workplace dynamics and social performances through the lens of a cafe where employees are expected to act out romantic roles for their patrons. This premise allowed the series to examine themes of authenticity and emotional labor within a stylized, aesthetic-focused environment.
The 2023 television anime adaptation was produced by studio Passione and directed by Hijiri Sanpei. The production aimed to translate the manga's intricate character designs and the cafe's opulent Victorian-inspired decor into animation. Upon its release, the series was noted for its balance between dramatic character development and its subversion of classic yuri tropes, drawing interest for its focus on the underlying tensions between the lead characters.
