Where it came from

Donaldson Smith's sparrow-weaver, or Plocepasser donaldsoni, was formally described by the ornithologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe in 1895. The specimen was collected by the American explorer and physician Arthur Donaldson Smith during his 1894 expedition through the Horn of Africa, an endeavor aimed at mapping the region between Berbera and the Tana River. This species is endemic to a limited range in Ethiopia and Somalia, where it occupies arid shrubland and acacia-dotted landscapes.

The species is distinguished within its genus by its specific structural adaptations, most notably its broad wings and distinctive notched tail, which facilitate its movement within the dense, thorny scrub of its native habitat. As part of the Plocepasser genus, it is known for constructing communal, complex, and often messy nests of grass and straw. While it remains a bird of significant interest to taxonomists due to its restricted geographic distribution and unique morphological traits, it is rarely encountered by the public due to the remote nature of its habitat.
