Kirk's White-eye

Kirk's White-eye (Zosterops kirki) is a small passerine bird endemic to the island of Grand Comoro in the Comoros archipelago. It was first described by the British ornithologist George Ernest Shelley in 1880, named in honor of the British diplomat and naturalist Sir John Kirk, who collected specimens during his time serving as the consul-general in Zanzibar. The species is characterized by its rounded wings and tail, which are typical adaptations for the dense forest canopy environments where it resides.

The bird is recognized for its distinctive yellowish-green plumage and the characteristic white ring around its eye from which the species name originates. Historically, these specimens were sought by 19th-century European naturalists documenting the biodiversity of the Indian Ocean islands. It remains a subject of ongoing ornithological interest, primarily concerning its taxonomic relationship to other white-eye species in the region and the ecological pressures affecting its restricted habitat.
